Teachers Policy
In order to maintain genre feel, applications are
accepted for teachers at the beginning of Fall and
Spring semesters (During the summer months and during
the Winter Break) ONLY. The main webpage will state
whether teacher applications are being taken or not.
If you attempt to apply during a span when we are not
accepting applications your request will be denied and
you will be told to reapply when we are open.
Playing a teacher is a very serious responsibility.
(Just look at everything you have to read!) If you
are simply looking for a reason to play an adult on
campus, you may want to consider Reasearch/Graduate
Students, or School Staff. A certain amount of both In
Character and Out Of Character responsibility and
maturity is required for a teacher. Teachers have In
Character authority over the students, and to some
degree shape the flow of the roleplay. Teachers also
have the ability to award and deduct House Points, so
that the room staff knows they can trust you to be
fair and impartial is crucial. You also need to have
a sense of when stepping in and asserting your
character's authority would be appropriate, and when
barging in on a power trip is going to stifle student
RP.
Because out of character maturity and room
participation is also a factor, it is highly unlikely
muns who are new to the room will be given a teacher
character initially, unless staff or well established
players in the room know you from elsewhere. The best
bet for most people is to play a student character
first. This allows the staff to get to know you, and
have some basis for judgement if you later apply for a
teacher character.
No player will be granted more than one teacher
character. This includes canons. Furthermore
teachers must specialize in a subject that the staff
feels is signifigantly different from any existing
subjects. Be sure in your application to include a
DETAILED description of the subject to be taught.
Teacher characters exist to enhance the roleplay
experience of the student characters. As a teacher
you will be expected not only to play your character,
but throughout the year to provide students roleplay
opportunities. The preferred method is in the form of
class plays. (Teachers MUST be willing to do large
scale multiplayer roleplays. If you will only play
with one or two people do not apply.) However
quizzes/tests, projects, field trips, reports, and
other class related activities are all suitable
alternatives.
At the end of each semester the teacher listing is
reviewed by room staff, and teachers who have not
displayed adequate participation will have their
teacher status revoked to make room for new teachers.
It is your job to remember to play, not ours to remind
you. Status may be revoked at any time for violating
room rules with ANY character, abuse of authority, or
any other action the staff feels necessitates it.
Playing a teacher is a privilege, not a right.
Also, the staff makes every effort to keep the number
of teachers to something reasonable. Students can
only take a limited number of non-required(ie
non-canon) classes, so for adequate enrollment there
must be limits on the number of those to choose from.
This means every application is judged very
critically, and some may be left pending for long
periods of time in order to allow other applications
to come in. Every application must have the benefit
staff feels it would bring to the room weighed against
the fact that it is taking up a slot, which either in
the short or the long term, could have gone to another
teacher character. We reject more teachers than we
accept. If you are going to take rejection
personally, do not apply. Remember arguing with host
decisions is against room rules and continued debate
after a final decision has been made will be treated
as the rule-breaking it is.
Further guidelines and rules of thumb on Classes, House Points
and Schoolwork exist. Be sure to read them if you are granted a teacher.
