Melody is wizard born, one more name on the tapestry of the "Most Noble and Ancient House," as it were. (She is considerably removed from the canons however. Her great grandfather was the brother of Draco et al's great grandfather. Family Tree) She dislikes her family name and attempts to always go by her first, so it is possible that some students may not even know this connection or her family name.
She only began attending Hogwarts in her fourth year (1994). Prior to that, she was a student in a small wizarding school in the Baltics.
The truth is, her parents, Pollux and Anamira Black, were both Death Eaters. Her father was of far more prominence than her mother, and a part of the inner circle that contained the Lestranges, Dolohov, and Rookwood. Together, he and his wife comitted many terrible crimes during the dark years. After Voldemort's downfall, they eluded capture for a short time by hiding in Italy, but were finally captured shortly before their daughter turned three.
Since then, their daughter was raised in London muggle orphanages, but always under the close eye of the Ministry of Magic, most notably Barty Crouch whose own son had been collaborated with her parents in several crimes.
Growing up with the Ministry's warnings about her fate if she should turn out like her parents has produced a girl who is uncertain of her every action. Not surprisingly, this made her a prime target for teasing at her previous school. But the potions professor was especially kind to her, and as a result she developed a fascination with the art, spending all her spare time studying it.
Since arriving at Hogwarts, she has done her best to stay out of notice, or under the protection of more confident housemates. There have been a few unpleasant incidents with other houses, however.
